3 Money Wasters: Where Does Your Money Really Go?

Where is your extra money going every month?

Do often wonder where your money goes after every payday? After paying the mortgage/rent, utilities, the kids’ extracurricular activity fees, gas, groceries, and pet supplies…where does the rest of your hard earned [saved] money disappear to?

There are several places that a few dollars seem to be swallowed up without us ever realizing it. A few dollars here, another one there…but at the end of the month you wind up spending more on fees that you could have otherwise saved.

How much are you wasting on the following?

Bank Fees: You should not be charged a fee for your checking account. There are plenty of financial institutions who have “fee-free” checking. Also banks are charging higher rates on non-bank ATM usages, [to get back what they lost when the economy took a nose-dive], multiple ATM transactions and outrageous fees when a check bounces or you cause an overdraft on your account. You could be paying as much as $20 to $100 a month on such fees. Talk to your banker, see if you can’t find a free or more affordable option; worst case scenario would be to change banks.

Cell Phone Plans: Single and multiple -line cell phone plans have expanded their plans, services and discounts too. Can you bundle some of your services or remove the unlimited texting to a limited plan? Ask your carrier about other options. At the end of your 1 or 2-year agreement reassess your cell phone plan, and you may find that another carrier is willing to offer you more bundled services for less money. Also ask about discounts for AAA, Golden Buckeye, AARP, company/corporate plans to save a few extra dollars every month.

Revolving Credit Card Balances: It doesn’t matter if you have a New York and Company credit card with a balance of $256 or a CitiCard with a balance of $4,789.27, if you are constantly carrying over a balance every month, you are paying too much on interest and fees. Work to pay off these credit cards, and do not use them if you don’t have to! Over the course of 1 year, you could be paying nearly double what you own on interest alone. Credit card companies make money through the interest they charge you. Pay it off, and only use in the event of emergency or when traveling, but save enough cash to pay it off within a month or two. If your APR is above 10%, negotiate with your issuer to lower the amount.

#Couponing FAQ: Where Do I Shop When I Can’t Find What I Want?

Yep, I’ve heard this question on more than 1 occasion. You’ve done your clipping & sorting, perused the ads for the best deals and compared them to your weekly grocery list, and yet none of the 5 grocery stores seem to have what you need. I experienced this just a couple weeks ago.

Hopefully you have 1 general discount store in your area where you can buy groceries and other household items when other stores don’t have what you want. Where I live, we have Aldi’s, Walmart and Super Kmart. Aldi’s was my safe store for buying the bulk of my groceries before Extreme Couponing, and this is also the store I return to when the coupon deals do not work for me.

Another location is your own stash of food and supplies. If you have been taking advantage of those 59 cent specials and 2 for 1 deals with coupons, you’ll only have to go as far as your own cupboards. I have stocked up on enough canned tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, black beans and corn for the next several weeks from buying them at 59 cents in bulk. I also stocked up on frozen veggies and chicken the last few weeks, so I have not been to the grocery store in 2 weeks except to buy milk and to the farmer’s market for fresh produce (which my Mom bought a box of slightly irregular veggies that we shared and were able to make several meals from for just 5 dollars.)

My next shopping trips will be targeted on peanut butter, bread, crackers, cereal and boxed food for weekly consumption and reserves.

Where do you go shopping when coupons and deals are plentiful? I’m open to new ideas!

#Coupon Alert: No Coupon Inserts July 3 2011 Holiday Weekend

Reminder to save your pennies and don’t buy this Sunday’s newspaper, unless you actually want to read it! This is a holiday weekend; therefore, no coupon inserts in most Sunday papers. Do look for ads in weekly/daily newspapers though.

The last 2 weeks in Cleveland, Ohio area the coupons have been exactly the same, so I have 4 of each coupon.

Who needs catfood, paper towels and laxative coupons? I have them. Contact me at info@greenerlivingblog.com!

**UPDATE: Curiosity got the best of me and I took a peek at July 3rd’s Sunday newspaper to find that P&G had 1 coupon insert. Upon further investigation, P&G coupon inserts can be found in most major Sunday newspapers the first Sunday every month. Ensure you pick up multiple copies or buy the paper at a discount on Monday or even sneak into paper recycling bins to find more copies at no cost!**
