My son and I saw Sherlock Holmes the other evening at the local movie theater. If and when I decide to see a movie at a theater, I always attend the matinee with the reduced rate. Since we were able to get that “great deal” of $6.75, I didn’t mind paying for both of us; however, the concession stand prices really got my attention.
If it wasn’t for a gift card, I would have obliged to my son’s request to sneak in a couple cans of soda and left over Christmas candy.
Movie theaters are ripping us off with their outrageous soda and bagged popcorn prices. For example, $4.25 for a large soda (32oz), $5.25 for a large popcorn that is pre-popped and comes in a bag then warms up under the heat lamps. ( I know how this works because I worked at a movie theater for a year.)
The movie was awesome and I think it was justified to see it on the big screen with surround sound, and the theater was quite empty so I didn’t have to listen to teenagers talking or cell phones interrupting the show.
I still prefer to wait for the CD version and rent it from my local library for FREE. Like the ones I just picked up today, The Soloist and Schindler’s List (my son’s request). The “extra features” on many CDs are what I really look for, and you just can’t get that insider info at a movie theater.
What’s your view on going out to the movies? Do you go? How often? How much do you typically pay for the tickets? Do you buy food or smuggle it in? I’d like to hear from you!

Pretty nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed browsing your blog posts. In any case I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write again soon!
Well, since I don’t go to the movie theater due to my limited entertainment budget. Instead, I go to my nearby library where I can rent three or more DVD’s and even video tapes of older movies at no cost other than my time choosing titles. I did subscribe to Netflix until recently, but found my schedule sometimes too busy to watch movies. So, now when I know I will have time to watch movies I go to the library. I belong to two libraries, the one in the town where I live and another in town where I work. The latter does not impose late fees for those 60 and over. Works for me!
