One Step Toward Greener Living

I live in a multiple-family apartment community where I pay all the utilities except trash. Although my rent is more expensive than most other apartments in my town, I do like the fact that we have a community recycle bin and our water bill is based on a conservation usage rate.

You can take that first step toward greener living by looking at your water bill or the things you throw in the trash that could be recycled and reduce it.

Take only 1 shower per day – set a timer no longer than 10 minutes. Recycle all paper (including junk mail, envelopes, flyers & newspapers), glass bottles, plastic #1-5 usually.

What has been the easiest or most beneficial mark you have made for turning your family onto a greener lifestyle?

I too, recycle as much I can, paper, junk mail, cereal boxes, plastic milk bottles, aluminium cans and so on. My regular trash is minimal and my recycle bin is always overflowing. I probably could do better in the water department. Although, I do wash almost everything in cold water. Try to turn off, unplug anything not in regular use. Keep blinds closed when it’s hot and sunny or cold. Use CFL bulbs. Try to remember to use my cloth shopping bags, ask for paper bags at the grocery store. They seem to be stingy with paper bags, but generous with plastic bags. I usually have to ask that they put my groceries in two bags rather than try to cram everything into ONE bag! My pet peeve!! Also, try to plan errands on the way to and from work or group my errands say on a Saturday afternoon to conserve gas. Could work harder at being greener!
